People usually cringe when you mention the word exercise. The thought of being forced to move your body to lose weight often conjures up thoughts of resistance, visions of pain-filled hours of struggling against all odds to lose a mere pound or two…
This is the problem – When you begin a weight loss program or new diet, a negative mental shift usually occurs too early in the process for you to get any traction. The motivation that propelled you to begin is usually washed away once the pain of “battle” kicks into gear. One gym workout, maybe two, perhaps three…and it’s over!
Take a New Year’s Resolution as an example. How often do people begin a new weight loss journey on January 1st, only to find themselves “off the wagon” by January 7th, or 10th, or 14th (at the very latest)?
Why is this? Well, you only have to think about “Why” you’re overweight in the first place? If you’d already had the skill to delay gratification then you may have never arrived at this point. Yes, sometimes circumstances are beyond our control. You may be a victim of circumstance, but more likely, you are a victim of your environment and, more specifically, a lack of discipline.
In my estimation, the weight loss process is often too simplified. Losing weight is more a mental game than it is a physical game. We are more mental beings than we are physical beings. But… too often we are driven by impulse and not preplanned thoughts. Impulse leads us to a shortsighted view of reality.
The reality is – you will be alive a year from now. So why not consider that when thinking about your next meal? In truth, you should. If you have it in your mind that you really plan on losing weight you’ll need a longer term view of yourself and your life. Without that kind of shift in your mentality you aren’t going to make it. Not this time, not next time.
But that’s the problem – there is no “weight loss” training that helps a person begin that mental shift. Join a gym and you may get help from a trainer. But when you go home at night… You are left to your own devices. And we already know where those devices will lead.
